Northumberland County Council has appointed Newcastle PR agency Karol Marketing to help with its social media use.
Karol will advise the council on how to use social tools including weblogs, Twitter and Facebook.
The aim is to help the council to integrate these platforms with its existing channels and allow it to better reach and communicate with its residents.
Ross Wigham, interim head of communications at Northumberland County Council, said: “According to our research around 52% of people in Northumberland now use social media sites in their everyday lives, making it a powerful tool for keeping our residents informed.
“Keeping in touch with our 300,000 residents is a challenge because of the huge geographical area we cover and this is another channel that people can use to access information. In time, it will also help facilitate genuine dialogue with the public and ultimately lead to our services becoming more effective.”
Having already set-up profiles on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the council is now working with Karol to build a targeted community online.
Stefan Lepkowski, managing director at the agency, said: “The challenge lies in creating a manageable strategy where the council is both able to communicate proactively about the things it is planning to do as well as respond to any issues that arise.”
