Have a very creative Christmas: The Drum's holiday campaign coverage

It's the most wonderful time of the year again, and brands around the world are gifting us some of their biggest campaigns in an effort to get us all in the festive spirit.

With campaigns coming in from the likes of Gap, Selfridges, Target, John Lewis and others, here is this year's hoard of Christmas campaigns: from the heartbreaking to the heartwarming and humorous, soundtracked by jingling sleigh bells or acoustic covers of 80s pop songs and illuminated by the golden glow of LED fairy lights.

Take a look under the tree and click on the box that most takes your fancy - don't forget to vote for the work you think best captures the spirit of Christmas. Check back here often to see all the latest campaigns and check out The Drum's ongoing Christmas coverage here.

: 'The Hoodie'

Date: October 2019
Gap's holiday campaign for 2019, 'The Hoodie' tells the story of a young boy and his mother and the evolution of their relationship over the years.
Directed by AG Rojas, the film showcases the love and timeless bond between a mother and son told through the lens of a single Gap hoodie, one of the brand’s most iconic items of clothing. The Gap hoodie serves as the vehicle in which the spot moves through decades of nostalgia and moments of intensity in the forming of this familial relationship.
A part of the 'Gift the Thought' brand platform, Gap wants to celebrate how much you really know the person that you’re gifting to and put thoughtfulness back into those relationships, because the best gifts are given with meaningful intention.

Date: November 2019

: 'Thanks Mrs C '

Date: November 2019
Barbour returns to Raymond Briggs once again, opting for ‘Father Christmas’ over ‘The Snowman and The Snowdog’ in ‘Thanks Mrs C’ heartwarming animation.
Briggs first wrote ‘Father Christmas’ in 1973, which was adapted into an animated special in 1991. The book tells the tale of Father Christmas, presenting a dramatically different modern interpretation of the character. He is far from joly, an alcoholic and lives in a normal house with the usual tasks involved with his delivery on Christmas Eve.
To revisit the book and animation, Barbour has brought back its original director Dave Unwin to reimagine the story.
The Christmas spot - ‘Thanks Mrs C’ - follows Father Christmas through the decades, as he delivers presents with the help of his Barbour wax jacket.
Marking 125 years of Barbour, the film begins in 1894, as Santa receives a gift from Mrs Claus - a waxed jacket to replace his old jacket that had become a little threadbare.
To highlight the longevity of its wax jackets, the animation visits Santa in three different decades - the 1930s, 1960s and 2019. And while the children may grow up and homes change, his one constant is the Barbour jacket that helps him overcome the difficulties of delivering presents.
The animation ends with Father Christmas in the comfort of his home after another busy present drop. As he sits with a cup of warm tea, he thanks his wife for her thoughtful gift she gave him 125 years ago that has looked after him over the years.

: 'Bringing the Holidays Home'

Date: November 2019
No one should be left behind when it comes to receiving holiday joy. If you live somewhere remote or in a big city, accessible or difficult to get to, the USPS goes the extra mile to make sure your holiday greetings and gifts get to you, no matter where you are.
The latest spot from McCann New York follows the journey of actual USPS carriers making deliveries across the country’s diverse geography and environments. It’s not just snow they take on, but sandy desert, busy urban areas and quiet countrysides.
At one point, we even see a carrier traverse the countryside and be greeted by a friendly herd of goats, which of course doesn’t stop the delivery. In each case, we see the journey end at the front doors of happy customers receiving their holiday mail and packages. This is acclaimed by the song “Home for the Holidays,” because (as the seasonal classic reminds us) no matter how far away you roam, when you pine for the sunshine of a friendly gaze, for the holidays, you can’t beat home sweet home.

: 'Leafy Blinders'

Date: November 2019
Supermarket Aldi's latest spot sees the return of the ever-popular Kevin the Carrot. The nation’s favourite carrot will be returning to screens on Thursday 7 November at 5.30pm on ITV.
The 70-second film follows on from Aldi’s Christmas teaser which aired last Friday (1 November), in which Kevin finds himself in hot water with an angry gang of brussels sprouts. New character Russell Sprout, and his Brummy gang of ‘Leafy Blinders’, are boiling with rage about Kevin and his family of carrots stealing the show as the star Christmas vegetable.
This year’s advert begins with the sprouts gathering round Kevin to teach him a lesson. They’ve heard he’s planning on putting on a massive Christmas show and they want to put a stop to it. Luckily Kevin manages to escape the sprouts’ clutches with the help of Tiny Tom and deliver his ‘Christmas Spectacular.’ Katie and the kids make a reappearance, along with a whole cast of new characters.

: 'Community Christmas'

Date: November 2019
The festive season is a time for people to come together, but sadly, every year, there are people who spend Christmas alone.
Loneliness particularly affects our older folk. Prezzo believes that no elderly person should be alone at Christmas, and to help with this they’ve partnered with an incredible charity campaign called Community Christmas. Community Christmas host over 700 local community events all over the country in the run-up to the big day, and this year the campaign is being entirely funded by Prezzo.
To support the campaign, Prezzo is calling on its customers to donate a seat at their own table this festive season. By inviting an elderly guest to join your celebrations, you’ll be able to experience the joy that an older person can bring, as well as giving the gift of a delicious meal and great company to those who would otherwise be on their own. Those wanting to support can call on Prezzo on social media using the hashtag #PrezzoDonateASeat and Prezzo will endeavor to pair them with an elderly guest in the local community to join them for lunch or dinner at their local Prezzo*.

Date: November 2019
Visa’s Christmas campaign is supporting the UK’s independent retailers for a second year. In a rallying cry to UK shoppers, the campaign is encouraging people to switch their focus from what they are buying to where they are buying, urging shoppers to show their local high streets some love this Christmas and beyond.
The TV advert features 13 real shopkeepers – including a bookseller, greengrocer, antique dealer and café owner - singing Queen’s Somebody to Love. The campaign will put the spotlight on over 150 independent retailers nationwide, including featuring them in personalised adverts on prime city-centre billboards as well as geo-targeted ads on social media.
The campaign also features a nationwide competition inviting shopkeepers to warm up their vocal chords and recreate Visa’s Christmas advert to show why ‘Where You Shop Matters’. The winning retailer will see their advert air during a prime-time advertising slot in the run-up to Christmas for millions to see.

: 'A dog is for life, not just for Christmas'

Date: November 2019
Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is urging the public not to buy or give dogs as presents as it releases a new TV advert to reinforce the message behind its famous slogan ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.’
The charity’s slogan is brought to life in the ad through a little puppet dog made of cork, who arrives on Christmas Day. After lapping up attention during the Christmas festivities, the puppet dog is then unceremoniously dumped outside with the rubbish the next day where he turns into a real dog and is rescued by Dogs Trust.
The 60-second TVC features vocals by Academy Award winning songwriter Sam Smith, in a cover of the Christmas classic ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and launches on ITV1 on 9 November. 40, 20 and 10-second versions will follow in cinemas, on social media and in digital adverts in shopping centres and on high streets.
The advert is supported by a through the line campaign which reminds people of the ease with which dogs can get caught up in rush buying and how the charity’s vital message can be shared to make a difference in the lead up to Christmas.

: 'Gift Box'

Date: November 2019
The FedEx holiday campaign, created by BBDO NY, builds on the 'What we deliver by delivering' brand platform that was introduced last year, and focuses on consumers who will be shipping and receiving packages during the holiday season.
The film, titled 'Gift Box,' is intended to capture the emotional side of package delivery by illustrating how it’s not about the packages or pallets, but rather, what it means and does for people. The commercial follows the story of a young girl and how a simple FedEx box triggers her imagination, turning her Christmas morning into a magical holiday experience – a story that reminds viewers of the possibilities that FedEx enables not just during the holidays, but every day.
The advertising was directed by Noam Murro, who also directed last year’s series of brand spots.

In Ikea’s first-ever UK Christmas ad, a family is taunted by their bar-spitting kitsch ornaments, who encourage them to defy ‘home shame.’
Tapping into contemporary culture, the ad flies the flag for Grime music that has recently made a resurgence by entering into mainstream music for the first time. And who better to have on board than an artist that Skepta hailed as “the greatest grime MC of all time” – D Double E, who voices the gimcrack ornaments.
The campaign will launch with the film across broadcast and VOD TV, cinema and digital media. The 90”, 60” and 20” edits are fully supported with out-of-home, press, CRM and PR.
